About PPGCI

The Graduate Program in Information Science (PPGCI) offers a Professional Master’s Degree in Information Science since 2017, approved by Resolution No. 18/2016/CONEPE, and a Professional Doctorate in Information Science—the first of its kind in Brazil in the field of Communication, Information, and Museology—since 2024, authorized by Ordinance No. 749, dated July 29, 2024, issued by the Ministry of Education.

The main objective of the PPGCI is to train researchers and highly qualified professionals, with an emphasis on research and professional practice in the field of Information Science and related areas.

As of September 4, 2023, through Ordinance No. 171 from CAPES, the Professional Master’s Degree in Information and Knowledge Management was renamed to the Professional Master’s Degree in Information Science, broadening its training scope. Following this change, in January 2024, PPGCI updated the curriculum structure of the master’s program via Normative Instruction No. 1/2024. Currently, the Professional Master’s Degree in Information Science consists of a curriculum totaling 26 (twenty-six) credits, distributed among core courses, electives, and academic activities. The selection process is held annually, between April and May. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in Information Science or a related field and submit an intervention project in accordance with the guidelines set out in the selection notice. Additionally, candidates must provide proof of proficiency in a foreign language (English, Spanish, or French) and have an updated CV on the Lattes Platform. Foreign applicants are required to present a Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners (Celpe-Bras), issued by the Ministry of Education.

The Professional Doctorate in Information Science consists of a curriculum totaling 70 (seventy) credits, including core courses, electives, and academic activities (Normative Instruction No. 2/2024/PPGCI). The selection process is also annual, occurring between April and May. Applicants must hold a master's degree in Information Science or a related field and submit an intervention project in accordance with the selection notice. Proof of proficiency in two foreign languages (English, Spanish, or French) is required, along with an updated CV on the Lattes Platform. Foreign applicants must present the Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners (Celpe-Bras), issued by the Ministry of Education.

The PPGCI’s area of concentration is “Information Science and Society.” The program’s curriculum is centered on the theoretical and instrumental dimensions of Information Science and its implications in contemporary society, focusing on applied research in professional, institutional, and technological contexts where information serves as a fundamental resource for social transformation.
